The Power of Choice: Embracing Intentional Positivity

Written by Jason Block | Jul 26, 2024 2:00:00 PM

Back in my football days, a coach of mine had a favorite saying to motivate our off-season workouts: "You either get better or you get worse, you never stay the same." This mantra was about more than just physical training; it was about cultivating an attitude of continuous improvement and identifying and building on the positive aspects of individual performance. It was about taking a strength and making it a competitive advantage. It was about keeping our minds focused on progress. It was centered on the power of positive reinforcement. It was about building up, not tearing down.

This approach is incredibly applicable as you build a travel business, or any business for that matter. In business, some things don’t go as planned, they just don’t go right. There is failure, and where there is failure there is a temptation to focus on the negative—missed targets, tough client feedback, unknown next steps, or even old-fashioned bad luck.

However, intentionally shifting our focus to
the positives can significantly change how we manage and grow our businesses. This conscious daily decision even has the power to change how our mind operates and the joy we take from life. This isn't motivational hocus pocus—but the real science of brain chemistry. Let's keep this energy going and examine the hows and whys behind the power of positive thinking.

Why Focus on the Positive?

In any business, particularly one as dynamic as travel, it's easy to fixate on what's going wrong. Negative outcomes, bad luck, and shortcomings can dominate our thoughts and lead to a harmful cycle of negativity that impacts our ability to think clearly and act effectively. Instead, by consciously choosing to focus on the positives, we not only enhance our daily satisfaction but also set a foundation for sustained business growth.

Building from Strengths

If you're actively pursuing success in your travel agency, you'll undoubtedly encounter positive outcomes—whether that's receiving positive feedback from a client, achieving higher-than-expected sales in a particular segment, or simply getting new professional business cards. These successes, no matter how small, are crucial building blocks for your business.

Focusing on these positives allows us to build and grow from a position of strength. It shifts our perspective from what's lacking to what's working, which not only improves our mental state but also highlights the most effective strategies and practices in our business. This positive focus propels us to replicate these successes across other areas, enhancing overall performance. When we give our attention to the positive aspects of our business, we create a virtuous cycle. Recognizing and celebrating small victories fosters an environment of optimism and motivation. This environment is conducive to creativity and innovation, as you feel more confident and empowered to develop ideas and solutions.

The Impact of a Positive Outlook

Moreover, a focus on the positive helps to attract and retain clients. Positivity generally produces smiles! Customers are drawn to people and businesses that exude confidence, success, and plain old happiness. They say you can hear a smile through the phone, and they’re right, you absolutely can. By highlighting the positive experiences and outcomes of your services, you enhance your agency’s reputation, making it a magnet for new and repeat business.

The principle that "you either get better or you get worse," so effectively used in sports, applies to all of us in the professional world. By focusing on the positives, building on your existing strengths, and perpetuating a cycle of positive reinforcement, you can steer your travel business toward greater success. Remember, dwelling on the negatives creates a downward spiral, while concentrating on the positives uplifts and propels you forward. Your mindset is a powerful tool—use it to foster a thriving, resilient business.
